Ouachita (pronounced wash•a•tah) is a mountain range in southeast Oklahoma. Wild Choctaw ponies, direct descendants of the Spanish mustang, have roamed the rough terrain of these mountains for hundreds of years. You may remember this little pocket of heaven from the movie Hildago. These mountains are the actual location where the famous mustang Hildago was released. It is said his descendants still run free in the mountains.
In recent years, an organized effort to save the Choctaw pony has had wonderful success. See spiritofblackjackmountain.com for more information. Also http://albc-usa.org/ChoctawRescue/crChoctawrescue.html
